In 1997, I had the opportunity to write for New Beginnings, a summer show performed by children ages 3–7. There were about 70 kids participating. We called them "The Polka Dots."
To help everyone memorize the songs, I made demo recordings, which were duplicated and given to the kids on cassette tapes. They played the songs over and over in their houses and cars. That's how we learned the music.
Also, the 4-track cassette deck I was using to make the demo recordings had a small knob which controlled the speed of the tape. By slowing it down a bit, singing falsetto while recording, and then speeding it back up to normal, I was able to create a "little friend" who helped me teach the music. I call this friend "Little Wonder."
Little Wonder is the soloist on this arrangement of "Where the Toys Go."
The "New Beginnings" program in Ocean Grove is for children ages 3–7. Their summer show in 1997 was called "The Polka Dots." The collection of songs and skits included this piece, a song called "Where the Toys Go."

Song - Where the Toys Go
A friend came over to play one day and we had lots of fun
From just after breakfast till my dinner was almost done
But just as I was finishing, my mother had to say -
Time to put your toys all away!
Oh - - - - My books go on the bookshelf, the toys go in the toy box
The games go in the closet, my Teddy Bear’s on the bed
My clothes go on the hangers and hooks, my socks are in the drawer
Now everything’s neat and clean again - Just like it was before
The very next day the rain came down - It didn’t just rain: it poured
Everything, I mean everything, was somewhere on the floor
Then the telephone rang and my best friend said
Please come over and play
Mom said - First you put your toys all away!
Oh - - - - My books go on the bookshelf, the toys go in the toy box
The games go in the closet, my Teddy Bear’s on the bed
My clothes go on the hangers and hooks, my socks are in the drawer
Now everything’s neat and clean again - Just like it was before
Now whenever I have to clean my room it doesn’t take too long
While I put my toys away, I sing the Pick-It-Up Song
Before I know it things have changed, my room looks good and then
My little brother takes it all out again
Oh - - - - My books go on the bookshelf, the toys go in the toy box
The games go in the closet, my Teddy Bear’s on the bed
My clothes go on the hangers and hooks, my socks are in the drawer
Now everything’s neat and clean again - Just like it was before
Everything’s neat and clean again - Just like it was be-...
“Well, actually, it’s never been this clean... Ever!”
