"I Like Who I Am"

Solo: Peter Pan (singing to Wendy)
Ocean Grove Children's Show 1990
Peter Pan

Where in the Story

Wendy is surprised and saddened to hear that Peter Pan has never known what it means to have a mother. But after she describes the many ways a mother loves, Peter surprises her by expressing his own confident, carefree philosophy about life and adventure.

In the Darling nursery, while John and Michael are sleeping, Wendy and Peter Pan have been talking. Wendy, both saddened and surprised to find that Peter Pan has never known what it means to have a mother, is even more surprised when Peter tells of his home on the island of Never-Never Land, and then shares his confident, carefree philosophy about life and adventure!

Script Excerpt and Song
______________________________

Wendy
Peter Pan, your not having a mother is one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard.
How did it happen?

Peter Pan
I don’t know. Maybe I ran away the day I was born. Or maybe I fell out of my baby carriage,
like the other Lost Boys.

Wendy
Other... Lost Boys?

Peter Pan
Didn’t you know? There’s a whole bunch of ‘em in Never-Never Land. I’m their Captain.

Wendy
You are?

Peter Pan
Yes... and it’s fun. That’s what we do—have fun! And we never grow up! That way we can
 always go on having fun.

Wendy
There you go again. One minute, you’re sad. The next, you act like you don’t
have a care in all the world!

Peter Pan
I don’t! And why should I?

Song #6 - I Like Who I Am
Peter Pan

I like who I am
I like who I’m gonna be
I like what I see from my head to my feet plus all the rest of me
I like what I do
I like who I’m talkin’ to
Very soon they’ll see, most certainly
I like who I am

You know why? ‘Cause there’s Someone who made me
And He made me to be wonderful
He made me to be confident
He made me to be strong and free forever
He made me to be me

I like who I am
I like where I’m going to
If you lost your smile come with me a while and I’ll start showing you
I got lots of soul—I got personality
It isn’t hard to see
Take a look at me
I like who I am

You know why? ‘Cause there’s Someone who made me
And He made me to be wonderful
He made me to be confident
He made me to be strong and free forever
He made me to be me
He made me to be me

I like who I am
I like who I’m gonna be
I like what I see from my head to my feet plus all the rest of me
I like what I do
I like who I’m talkin’ to
Very soon you’ll see, most certainly
I like who I...
Sorry, I just can’t help it
I like who I am
