"A Heart Like You"

Solo: Tin Man (with Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow)
Ocean Grove Children's Show 2010
Yellow Brick Road

Where in the Story

Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow are walking through the forest when they hear a noise. Searching for the source of the sound, they discover a rusty man, made of tin, with an oil can just out of reach. They conclude that a little oil might set the man free. As they work, the Tin Man begins to move and speak.

Performance Note: This song is performed with several props: a "piano keyboard" (which just happens to be in the forest behind a bush), a rose (which the Tin Man hands to Dorothy just before sitting down at the keyboard), and a "saxophone" (which also just happens to be lying out of sight on the forest floor). As you are watching the Performance Excerpt video, you'll see how each of these props is used.

Also, for Toto, there is a "barking part" near the end of the song.

After meeting a very friendly Scarecrow, and untying him from the pole to which he was attached, Dorothy, Toto, and their new friend continued the journey toward the land of Oz. As they passed through a forest, they heard a strange moaning. Searching for the source of the sound, they discovered a rusty man made of tin. An oil can was nearby, just out of reach. The Scarecrow began applying the oil to the rusted joints, and soon the Tin Man was able to move and speak freely. He had quite a surprising story to tell.

(The Scarecrow picks up the oil can.)

Dorothy
Start with his mouth. Maybe then he can talk to us.

Scarecrow
I hope this works.

Tin Man
Aow... oow.

Dorothy
Listen. He’s trying to talk!

Scarecrow
A little more on this side over here.

Tin Man
Thank you.

(The Scarecrow continues working, oiling from the shoulders down to the feet, as Dorothy and the Tin Man speak.)

Dorothy
Who are you?

Tin Man
(sitting up slowly)
I don’t know if I know any more.
I’m just a shell of the person I once was.

Dorothy
Have you been here a long time?

Tin Man
Time. What is time?
What is anything where there is no love?

Dorothy
What do you mean?

Tin Man
Give me a minute, and I’ll explain it all.

Scarecrow
There. The oil is taking effect.
Can you stand up?

Tin Man
I think so. (standing slowly)
Ah, but it feels good to be moving again.

(They walk out toward the middle of the stage.)

Dorothy
Can you tell us what happened?

Tin Man
It was the witch. She’s a broken soul, and can’t stand
to see anyone happy. I was a woodcutter, building a house
for my soon-to-be bride, but the witch cursed me.
Now, as long as she lives, I’m an empty
container that once had a heart.

Dorothy
You don’t... have a heart?

Tin Man
It’s gone... taken from me...
Then she tied me up in the forest, leaving
the oil can just out of reach.
The ropes eventually got old and fell away,
but by then I was too rusty to move.

Scarecrow
The witch! I bet it’s the same one we met.

Dorothy
May I ask, what was your name before all this happened?

Tin Man
My name... what does it matter now?
Without a heart, how can anything matter?

Song #8 - A Heart Like You
Tin Man
A hunk o’ metal, from my head to my feet
That’s what I am, that’s what I’ll be
A hunk o’ metal, but it wasn’t that way
I once had a heart like you
And I loved a girl, and she loved me too
But the witch of the west said, “Here’s what I’ll do -
I’ll take your heart out and make you a hunk o’ metal”

And so I kept on working with all of my heart
How can I say that? I don’t even have one
Empty inside, without a friend to my name
I once had a friend like you
And I was building a house for my bride and me
But the witch of the west said, “It won’t ever be”
And she took my heart out and made me a hunk o’ metal

So now I’m a member of Tin Can Alley
Destined to rust in the rain and the dew
Oh, I’d wish with all my heart - if I only had one
That I had a heart like you
