"A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah"

Solo: Scarecrow and Crows
Ocean Grove Children's Show 2010
Yellow Brick Road

Where in the Story

After her unexpected arrival in Munchkinland, Dorothy enjoyed meeting the Munchkins and the good witch, Glinda. Glinda gave her a lunch basket and showed her where to begin her journey, at the place where the Yellow Brick Road started.

It was a fine morning, and Dorothy and Toto made good time as they walked. When noon came, they stopped to rest. Dorothy thought they should eat some of the food now and save some for later, so she began dividing up what they had been given. But before they had a chance to start eating, their attention was diverted by the sound of singing in the field behind them.

And so Dorothy set off down the road, carrying the lunch basket she received from Glinda. It was a fine morning, and she and Toto made good time as they walked. When noon came, they stopped to rest. Dorothy thought they should eat some of the food now and save some for later, so she began dividing up what they had been given. But before they had a chance to start eating, their attention was diverted by the sound of singing in the field behind them.

Song #7 - A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah

Scarecrow
I call anyone who can hear my voice
to listen to the words that I’m saying

Anyone paying attention?
Oh, well... looks like I’m singing to the cornfields again.
Like I always say... you win some, you lose some.

Here on a pole I’m watching the world go by
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
I have a wonderful view of the earth and sky
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
So take note if you’re walking the highway
I scare crows - but they don’t fly away
‘Cause they know I’m cloth and straw and hay
So they could hardly care
And I say A-Dee-Doe A-Doo-Bah-Bah Yeah!

(The crows enter, looking very relaxed.)

Crows
Yo-Ho-Yo, A-Dee A-Doe-A
Yo-Ho-Yo, A-Dee A-Doe-A
Yo-Ho-Yo, A-Dee A-Doe-A
Yo-Ho-Yo, A-Dee A-Doe-A

Scarecrow
Hey, Midnight, how’s it going?

Midnight
Not bad. How’s life on the pole?

Scarecrow
Can’t complain. What about you, Eclipse?
What’s happening?

Eclipse
Like nothin’, dude.

Scarecrow
And you, Licorice?

Licorice
Life couldn’t be sweeter.

Scarecrow
Lights Out? How’s the day treatin’ ya?

Lights Out
Not bad, Bobblehead.

Scarecrow
And my friend, Dark Side of the Moon.

Dark Side of the Moon
Hey, just call me D.S.

Scarecrow
What occasion brings you guys around?

Midnight
What do you think?

All the Crows
LUNCH!

Scarecrow
I might have guessed it. And right here
in the field I’m supposed to be guarding?

Eclipse
No place better.

Various Crows Singing
Me and my pals, we got ourselves a spectacular deal
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
Spending prime quality time in our favorite field
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
Here on the farm they think Hay Bale is doin’ his job
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
Meanwhile we be eating fresh corn on the cob
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah

Midnight
I think this calls for a convention.

D.S.
Is it a caucus, boss?

Midnight
Yeah, it’s a caucus.

“Hay! Support our Caws!” (Caw)
“Hay! Support our Caws!” (Caw)
We scavengin’ birds gotta eat like - like everyone else does...

Licorice
All right, which row should we eat from today?

Scarecrow
Oh, come on, you’re killing me. I’m supposed to be
scaring you away, and you’re talking about
which row of corn is the best?

Lights Out
Row seventeen’s not bad. I tried that one yesterday.

D.S.
I’m kind of partial to row seven myself.

Midnight
All right, all right, enough with the numbers.
We’re all going a la carte today.

Eclipse
Good decision, boss. Like we always say,
“If there’s seed on it, feed on it.”

Licorice
“Just shake it, and take it!”

Lights Out
“Request it... and digest it!”

D.S.
Everyone meet back here in three...

Crows
...two, one.

(The crows go in different directions and return right away with large ears of corn. They sit on the ground, eating the corn, and singing along on certain lines.)

Scarecrow
Here on a pole I’m watching the world go by
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
I have a wonderful view of the earth and sky
A-Dee A-Doe A-Doo-Dah A-Boo-Bah-Bah
So take note if you’re walking the highway
I scare crows - but they don’t fly away
‘Cause they know I’m cloth and straw and hay
So they could hardly care
And I say A-Dee-Doe A-Doo-Bah-Bah
And I say A-Dee-Doe A-Doo-Bah-Bah
And I say A-Dee-Doe A-Doo-Bah-Bah
Bah-Bah-Bah-Bah... Bah-Bah-Bah-Bah
(Bah-Bah-Bah-Bah.... Bah....) Yeah!
