The Chemistry Song

One day in college chemistry, the professor announced an upcoming quiz on the ions listed in our textbook. The list contained 49 ions which were grouped by their charge (+1, +2, +3, -1, -2, -3).

When a list of items is presented to be memorized, it's easier if you have a way to get the list to stay in your head. So I decided to write a "poem," including silly rhymes. It worked!

Years later I taught the ion poem to a few students. Then synthesizers came along, and I decided to arrange the "Chemistry Song". I made a few edits, gave it a surfer theme, and recorded it on a 4-track tape deck.

More years went by, and now with the web allowing easy communication around the world, it seemed like a good idea to share the song. The links below will allow you to download both the song (mp3) and the words (pdf), or you may click on the flash player to hear the song. Hope you have fun. "Catch An Ion Wave, Dude!"
